Taiwan’s annual Han Kuang military exercises will take place in April and July this year, according to the ROC Ministry of National Defense March 26.

Code-named Han Kuang No. 29, the first stage, running April 15-19 in Penghu County, will feature a live fire exercise under a simulated attack by mainland China, MND spokesman Luo Shou-he said. The exercises will include air defense, anti-airborne, amphibious landing, battlefield management, combat power preservation and counterattacking, he added.

According to Luo, the drills will go on 24 hours a day for five consecutive days. Thunderbolt-2000 multiple launch rocket systems will be deployed, but Hsiung Feng III and Standard Missile 2 systems will be left out this time, he said.

The second stage, slated for July 15-19, will feature computer-assisted war games. It will focus on operational tactics, the integration of air, army and marine forces, and information and electronic warfare capabilities, Luo said.

In response to the growing military threat from Beijing, the MND has been actively promoting the transformation of defense organizations, pushing for reform of the military service system and improving combat power, to enhance overall defensive capability and maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, Luo said.
